Presenting a superb handmade Mughal miniature painting featuring the Noah’s Ark.
A popular figure in the Qur’an, Noah (in Arabic, Nuh), his head surrounded by a flaming halo, sits at the center of this painting. According to Muslim tradition, Noah’s Ark was threatened by Iblis, the devil, who was thrown overboard, as depicted here, by his sons. This delightful rendering of the story can be ascribed to Miskin, one of the greatest painters in the workshop of the Mughal emperor Akbar (r. 1556-1605). An expert draftsman and colorist, Miskin was best known for his skilled and whimsical depictions of animals and birds. The modern artist has captured Miskin’s unmistakable style which comprised of organic compositions against a subdued palette with bight accents.
This historical Mughal miniature painting comes directly from the Indian state of Rajasthan – (historically noted as the epicenter of Mughal art). It was born from a single set of masterful artisan hands, using vibrant opaque watercolors on paper
